Earth's hatred for Kryptonians has only escalated - which is what makes it so odd that Nightwing and Flamebird pick now to become public super-heroes! Meanwhile, Lois Lane finally meets with the man she thought long dead - her father, General Lane.

Nightwing and Flamebird Vol 2 Superman James Dale Robinson 9781848569874 Books

With Superman off the scene--and the planet--DC attempted to push minor characters to the front of his assorted comics. This collection of comics continues the adventures of Nightwing and Flamebird, two interesting leads that show some potential. James Robinson and Greg Rucka are fine writers--but this book is bogged down with too many holes and an excessive number of cameos. Simply put, without knowing the other parts of the story--what Jimmy Olsen is up to, who Mon-el is and what he is doing in Superman's absence--the plot often makes little sense. The two leads and a look at Kryptonian religion and mythology redeem this some extent but that can only go so far. The art is solid and the bad guys are intriguing-even if the plot tries a bit too hard to be an epic tale. Still, this book could have--and should have--been better.

Nightwing and Flamebird Vol 2 Superman James Dale Robinson 9781848569874 Books Reviews

These characters were created trying to fill superman's shoes while he was in outer space, however their personalities shifted inexplicably along the story (no simple progression, just inconsistencies along the way).

The story starts with a simple premise (find Kryptonian spies) and shifts drastically to arguments about Kryptonian religion and prophecies.

However, it must be pointed out that these characters (Nightwing and Flamebird) will not play a significant role in the Superman universe, and therefore any investment in them should be seen as a not very intelligent way of spending your money if you are looking for a Superman's centric story (unless you really like the author <Rucka is the main one>, whom in my opinion never understood Superman and favored writing stories about supporting characters instead).

Finally, it is important to emphasize that the title of the book is misleading, Superman doesn't participate in this story whatsoever, so the name "Superman" should be dropped, it is not even directly linked with the "New Krypton" storyline that other superman titles covered during 2009.
This book starred two characters that had no impact on anything. The plot was some pseudo religious garbage that went so far up its own backside, I'm surprised the book wasn't covered in crap. I got this for free and I still want my money back. Avoid.
I reviewed Mon-El Volume 2 Man of Valor similarly in that this volume doesn't match the excitement or drama of the first and seems to meander along with no real discernible interest. I was surprised to see the drop in my interest from Volume 1 to 2 as I thoroughly enjoyed Volume 1.
During the New Krypton saga that was featured across the Superman family titles in 2010, Action Comics focused on the storyline involving Nightwing and Flamebird while Superman himself was featured in a special 12 issue limited title. The characters of Nightwing and Flamebird were based on Kryptonian mythology and religion. Nightwing was a name adopted by Richard Grayson when he went out on his own after his time with Bruce Wayne as Batman and himself as the first Robin, but this is not the same person featured in this story (though I did read Grayson took the name from the Kryptonian myth).

In my view, part of what keeps a character alive, fresh and real is their interaction in their world. Looking at some of my old Superman comics from the Silver Age, it seems most of them are simply Superman fighting some mad scientist alien guy and the whole story is contained in one issue, usually. Its not a complex type of story telling and other than seeing Clark Kent a little, we really don't delve into the life of our hero. Today, the readership is more sophisticated and interested in more complex storytelling. Maybe I didn't like being forced to collect 4 different titles in order to follow the New Krypton saga, but I enjoyed reading the issues, especially the Supergirl title, the Superman title (which followed Mon-el), and the New Krypton special title. The storyline in Action Comics was generally my least favorite, and the book was $3.99 a month, but to not collect it would leave you "out of the loop" if you wanted the whole story.

I usually enjoy Greg Rucka's writing very much. I'm not saying I didn't like it here, just not as much as I have in other books. As a lifelong student of comparative religion and mythology, and as a lifelong Superman fan, I enjoyed the mythology of Flamebird and Nightwing enough to say it was interesting, but I don't feel it needed to be dragged out in so many issues of Action Comics. I would have enjoyed a special one-shot featuring religion and myth of Krypton while the story in Action Comics could have focused on moving the story along and given us a * and notation to see the one-shot.

I enjoy reading about the characters who make up the world that Kal-el calls home. I enjoy reading about his friends, co-workers and life beyond the simplistic "beat-em-up" stories of my childhood.

This particular book is one I'd recommend reading from a library rather than paying full price for a new copy. Other things happened in this series during that time besides just the Nightwing and Flamebird saga. Its worth reading to be up to date and help flesh out Superman's mythology, but it might not be worth it to all readers to pay full price for a new copy.

After this story line ended, Action Comics went on to feature Lex Luthor. As I understand it, Superman was given his own title in 1939 once it was clear how popular he was, but originally he was billed as "Superman starring in Action Comics" and Action Comics featured stories about more than just Superman. Today, Superman is still featured in his own title and Action Comics has been focused on other characters who inhabit the world of Superman and Metropolis. So while this is not strictly a "Superman" story, it is a story about people who inhabit Superman's world.
